Golf's Holy Grail
Finding the perfect swing

The Holy Grail is a great analogy for the perfect golf swing. The Grail has never been found, though people have spent their entire lives searching for it. Your perfect golf swing is the same way. You'll spend your life looking, but always find room for improvement. Well, as they say, it's about the journey…

If you're having some trouble getting that swing successfully into action, and you don't want to invest a king's ransom on a professional golf instructor (who you're afraid will only teach you what you already know anyway), here's a quick group of thoughts that may start you off in a better, more rewarding direction. Keep reading, this simple guide might just be able to help you learn how to improve your golf swing. It's just another step in the journey.

Relax! Okay, once more – Relax! If you want to get any good swing into motion, you will need to relax. Actually, you may already have the best motion you can achieve, all things considered. Maybe you just need to brush it up slightly, which can often be accomplished simply by relaxing. If you are already relaxed, relax more. Try to forget that anyone is around. Nobody is watching you – people have better things to do. (Just kidding. I was trying hard line intimidation tactics.) Only you are there. Nobody will be judging your shot, or your game.

Your grip is another highly probable area for easy improvement. Be sure your club grips are in good order, for starters. There are numerous variations of golfing grips, and you should choose one that feels right for you, then play it until you modify it to your style of play. Then stick with it! Finding your best grip is really just simple trial and error. The ones that don't work are easily found and weeded out. Eventually, you'll find the ones that best complement your swing, and then you can narrow them down until you get the best of the best. It may take a while to find yours, but it's worth it later on. Starting with a bad golf swing is like starting with a bad tennis stroke: you can only get to a point of proficiency and then you're stopped cold, with no way to continue to improve.

A bad stance almost always goes hand-in-hand with a bad swing. If you don't perfect your stance, then you will almost surely have a bad swing and, as you'd expect, a less than perfect follow-through. But a good stance is not as difficult to attain as other things in golf. It may just take you a small bit of time and work to get the motion right. This can be especially true if you've been using a bad stance for quite some time. The longer you've been training your body to stand improperly, the longer and more difficult it will be to break out of the habit and move on to a good stance for a great swinging motion.

So how will you know when you've found the perfect golf swing? Well, if I knew that I'd be setting up my booth at golf centers everywhere, and selling the information for untold sums! It's tough to know, because when you find the perfect swing, it will need lots of practice and revision. My best advice is to really focus, pay attention, "feel" the swing, and when you think you've got it, practice, practice, and then practice practicing. Stick with the newly discovered swing and work with it. There's always room for improvement – remember, it's a journey.

You may never become the best golfer in the world, but if you search for that elusive perfect swing, and find what works for you – your scores will drop, and then who cares about being the best in the world. I'm always happy to win a round at the 19th hole. I love my golfing friends – almost as much as I love beating them on the links.
