Arizona Desert Landscape
A series of informational articles on landscaping in the Sonora Deserts containing and surrounding Tucson Arizona - including Xeriscaping

  Arizona Desert Landscape

Cactus - The cactus is definitely a special type of plant, sometimes reminding you of the overall philosophy of life. What you see as full of thorns and totally repelling can actually be capable of having breath-taking, beautiful flowers in the most unexpected manner.
Cactus – King of Desert Flora - The cactus is a spiny succulent. The cactus is a member of the very large family of plants called Cactaceae. This plant family includes some 1,700 species of cactus that are indigenous to North and South America.
Desert Mesquite Trees - Hide under it - sit on it - walk on it - even cook with it. The mesquite tree is almost too useful to be in a desert environment. You just don't normally think of things in the desert being helpful, or positive, or good.
Saguaro Cactus - Carnegiea gigantea - Arguably the most notorious of all the icons of the desert southwest is the mighty and majestic Saguaro Cactus. This whale of the cactus world is also synonymous with Tucson, Arizona.
Tucson Garden Accents - Tucson Arizona offers gardeners and landscapers a special set of challenges - and commensurate rewards. Tucson is in the Sonora Desert region, an arid, harsh place for living things. Many native plants are resistant to the dryness, and do quite well - especially in a Xeriscape design plan.

The Great Tucson Battle
I put gravel down on top of every blade of grass in my yard after a mere two years of battling the natural elements of the Sonoran Desert region that is home to Tucson, Arizona. But not before covering it with a heavy, black nylon mesh.

Xeriscaping - Creating a Beautiful Tucson Environment - The Sonoran desert receives about seven inches of rainfall per year. More than half of that water is used to water gardens and landscapes. Xeriscaping is a new way of thinking, a way of having beautifully landscaped yards, while reducing the amount of precious desert water that is used to maintain the flora.
