On March 4, 2005 the Arizona State Genealogical Society and the Evergreen Mortuary and Cemetery will sponsor a tour of some of the gravesites of Tucson history's more celebrated people. The event, which will last about two hours, will be held at the cemetery located at 3015 N. Oracle Road. Attendees should meet at the Fort Lowell gate.
The historical Tucson event tour will be conducted three times on March 4th. The two morning tours begin at 9:00 and 11:30 AM and cost $15.00 per person. These two events will include lunch. The afternoon tour will be started at 2:30 PM and will only cost $10.00. There will be no lunch served at the afternoon tour.
Well versed in Tucson events, celebrities, and history, guides for the tours will be garbed in vintage attire, and deliver accounts of the person's contributions to Tucson history. Gravesites will be visited by the tours, and presentations delivered to attendees. Some of the gravesites that will be on the event will include: Henry Buehman, Bettina Steinfeld, James "Pop" McKale, Leo Goldschmidt, Mary Page Handy, Oscar Monthan, Annie Hughes, and Mary Bernard Aguirre.
Some of the gravesites to be visited are those of people who left a high profile mark on the city of Tucson such as Oscar Monthan and James "Pop" McKale. The Davis-Monthan Air Force Base got the second half of its name from Oscar Monthan, who was not born in Tucson. The University of Arizona's McKale Center is named in honor of James "Pop" McKale, who started his athletic career in Tucson by teaching high school.
Some of the graves' inhabitants did not have such high profile influence on the city, and yet their lives and actions impacted Tucson in noteworthy ways. And finally, some of the sites to be visited belong to people who made their mark in small, but meaningful ways.
If you are planning to go to this event, it is advisable to wear some comfortable clothing, especially shoes. There should be no activity in the tour that is too physically demanding, but good walking shoes will ensure a pleasant, comfortable event.
This is a Tucson event that you don't want to miss, especially if you are interested in Tucson history, or the people and events that shaped Tucson.
