You’ll see the world when you visit Tucson, Arizona in February. For two weeks every winter, Tucson becomes a bustling, international marketplace of buyers and sellers doing business at the Tucson Gem, Mineral & Fossil Showcase.
The “gem show” - as it's known - is much more than a single event at a single location. It’s closer to a “world’s fair” of gem shows, with thousands of participants and attendees at more than 30 sites around Tucson. Dozens of shows go on at the same time – in giant white tents, at hotels and resorts, and at exhibit halls marked with huge banners.
The show that started it all - the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show™ - packs downtown’s Tucson Convention Center over the last weekend of the event. This show attracts thousands of treasure hunters from every corner of the globe. The Tucson Gem & Mineral Show™ is open to the public only. There are displays from renowned museums and private collections along with over 250 mineral, gemstone, jewelry, and fossil retail dealers. It also features hands-on exhibits for the kids – something for everyone!
No matter who you are, there are interesting items to see at the many “open-to-the-public” shows throughout Tucson. From gold and diamonds to granite bookends and glass beads, and from fine specimens of dinosaur fossils to opals dug up from the outback of Australia – it's all at the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show™.
Most of the various gem and mineral shows are free; hours vary. Some dealers sell only to wholesalers. A pocket-sized show guide - with schedules, descriptions, shuttle routes and other information - is the MTCVB Gem, Mineral & Fossil Showcase Program Guide, available free at Tucson International Airport, resorts and hotels with shows, at the Tucson Visitor Center, La Placita Village, downtown at Broadway Boulevard and Church Avenue.
The Metropolitan Tucson Convention & Visitors Bureau is pleased to announce the institution of a free local shuttle service, GemRide™, to Tucson Gem, Mineral, and Fossil Showcase sites. The shuttles, funded by Park Wise, a self-funded division of the city of Tucson, will run nine different routes daily, January 28 through February 12, 2006. Shuttles will access gem shows located within the boundaries of River Road to the north, Valencia to the south, Camino de Oeste to the west and Kolb Road to the east. "This year, we have created an invaluable community partnership with Catalina Transportation Services to enhance the gem show experience for many visitors. The shuttle service will offer economical and simple transportation and parking options." States Chris Leighton, Park Wise Administrator. For more information call 866-PARK GEM (866-727-5436).
Gem Show guides, including shuttle maps, will be available at the Tucson International Airport, the Visitor Center in La Placita Village at 110 S. Church Avenue, Suite 7199, and at all shuttle stops by January 28. Official Show Guides and detailed shuttle maps will be distributed at all show locations. The shuttle schedule will also be printed in the Colored Stone Guide.
