Lizard

Many of the snakes and lizards in the desert may appear to be quite formidable, but they are not really dangerous – at least not to humans. Occasionally, people run into a Mountain Lion in the Sonoran desert, or the Santa Catalina, Santa Rita, Sierrita, or Rincon mountain ranges in the Tucson area. Walkers and joggers who frequent the Sabino Canyon area are very aware of the possibility of seeing a lion (also called a Puma) in the canyon. In the history of Tucson's stewardship of Sabino Canyon, animal control officers have had to remove unintentionally troublesome big cats more than once.

Desert Creature

This missive is only meant to give you a very small sampling of the thousands of plants and animals in the Tucson area – and the more interesting and unusual ones have received preferential consideration for inclusion herein. If you're going to go out into the desert – especially off of the state and federal trails and recreational areas – it is highly recommended that you do some research about the desert, the animals that live there, the plants that are there, and about how to care for certain types of emergencies and bites, stings, cactus spine infestations, and dehydration. The desert, while beautiful and alluring, can indeed be a dangerous place, so be sure you know how to safely survive out there, and how to care for those who might not know.

Fauna

Serpents…

There are 21 different species of snakes that inhabit the Tucson area, which is sometimes referred to as Arizona Upland Habitat. Of these varieties, there are five rattlesnakes and one coral snake (the Western Coral Snake - Micruroides euryxanthus) that are highly dangerous to humans. Other varieties such as the Lyre Snake (Trimorphodon biscutatus), carry venom, but it is not as potent as those above, and it is delivered in small quantities designed to debilitate small prey for easier consumption.
