The origins of Florence can be traced back to as long ago as the year 60 BC. Around that date, one first group of Romans arrived to this area of Italy, and established what would be the first settlement in Florence. This group of Romans was mainly composed by soldiers, and they named their town Florentia, probably without imagining how much it would grow, or the great impact and importance it would have in the future.
Originally, Florence was built following a pattern similar to a chessboard in such a way that it was similar to a typical castrum or army camp of its époque. Nowadays, while visiting Florence tourists can still observe this pattern at some parts of the city, such as in the area that surrounds the Piazza della Republica.
The best time of the year tourists could choose for having a vacation in Florence is probably between May and September, from the last weeks of spring to the middle of autumn. Between May and June, the average temperature in Florence is of about 24ºC, during June and August it is of around 30ºC, and between August and September of about 29ºC. The rest of the year can be nice too, although some visitors might prefer warmer temperatures -- since in that time of the year Florence is usually between 2ºC and 12ºC.
