Vacation in Turin An industrial city

Turin, also known as Torino, is a very important industrial city located in the Italian region of Piedemont. This city has a population of about 1.7 million inhabitants in its metropolitan area, a total area of about 130 square kilometers and an altitude of 240 meters. This city is one of the most visited destinations in that region of Italy, and receives vast numbers of tourists who travel to it not only for a vacation, but for work and businesses as well.

The name of this city, Turin, was born from the Celtic term "Tau," which can be translated as "mountains," in allusion to the nearby Alps and the Hills of Monferrato that surround it. On the other hand, the term Torino, as this city is called in Italian, can be translated as "young bull," which can be used as the main symbol or 'seal' of the city.

According to the experts, there are evidences showing that this area of Italy was already inhabited in the pre-Roman times, when the first group of Taurinis arrived and established the first settlement. One of the first important events known to have taken place in Turin happened during the 1st century BC, when a military camp was created by the Romans, and the first steps into today's Turin were taken. It was that construction that accounts for the 'chessboard-like' original design of the city - which can be still noticed at some areas.

The city of Turin is world famous as a very important industrial and commercial center. This city is the birthplace and home town of a large number of important industries, such as, for example, the Fiat car company, Martini, Invicta, Kappa, Caffarel, Telecom Italia, the National Italian TV channel RAI, and too much more to cite. This way, it is easy to see the impact this city has in the economy of Italy, and the importance it has for the rest of Europe as well.

There are many interesting constructs tourists can visit when they travel to Turin for a vacation. One of these many constructs is the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, a very interesting ancient building which hosts a peculiar antique art work piece known as the "Shroud of Turin." This internationally famous (and often disputed) piece consists of a linen cloth with the painting of a man on it. It is believed, by many, to be what covered Jesus in his sepulcher.

Other interesting places visitors should not miss while being in Turin include the Museo Egizio. In the Museo Egizio, tourists can view an excellent collection of Egyptian antiquities, which is actually the second largest and most important such collection n in the world. It is bettered only by the collection displayed in the Cairo Museum. There is also the Savoy Residences, which consists of a group of antique constructions that include the Royal Palace and several castles and residences, such as, for example, the Villa della Regina, the Palazzo Chiablese, the Valentino Castle, the Palazzo Madama, and the Royal Armory among others.

To change Centigrade to Fahrenheit use the formula (#°x9/5)+32.
0°C = 32°F • 10°C = 50°F • 30°C = 86°F • 40°C = 104°F
