Visiting The City of Siena, in Tuscany
|
Siena, capital of the province of same name, is a very attractive and interesting city located in the Italian region of Tuscany. The antique and historic center of this city was named a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO, and therefore it is easy to imagine the great amount of interesting and antique spots that visitors could visit in this region of Italy while on vacation. All those tourists who are willing to travel and have a vacation in a city that combines history, traditions, arts, as well as exciting activities, should always consider Siena as a good choice of destinations.
According to historians and archaeologists, the first settlements of Siena were established by the Sainas, a tribe that existed in the times of the Etruscans, around the 8th century BC. Some centuries after that, the Romans founded a town of their own on this spot, calling it Saenna Julia, which would eventually evolve into the modern city of Siena we see today. The official origins of Siena date from that époque in which the Romans established and founded it as Saenna Julia, and the actual emblem of the city still reflects this by depicting *Romulus and Remus. | |
During its first years of life, Siena was not a very prosperous or successful city due to the fact that it wasn't located next to any important road or path and, for that reason it usually was not taken into account for the trading of products. This way, during the Roman period, Siena was a little known and humble town which was often left aside by the bigger events in the region. However, when the Lombards invaded the region and took control over Siena the situation of the city started changing. The invaders created a route that passed through it and connected Cassia and Aurelia, two other very important cities in that époque. This ended the city's isolation.
Siena is home of one of the greatest Romanesque constructs of the world, the Duomo, or Cathedral of Siena. The Cathedral of Siena was built around the year 1375 and, according to experts, its structure and design is unique and cannot be found repeated at any other place in the world. Without any doubt, this construct is one of the main things tourists should make sure of visiting when they travel to this region of Italy. Whether your trip is for a vacation or for work, you should always try to make the time to visit the unique Cathedral of Siena.

Another place visitors should try not to miss in Siena, and would actually find difficult not to find, is the Piazza del Campo. The Piazza del campo is a very large and impressive square in which two important constructs are located: the Torre del Mangia and the Palazzo Pubblico. The Palazzo Pubblico is a very attractive building in which a very interesting art museum resides. This museum exhibits art, and antique art works such as frescoes made by the famous Ambrogio Lorenzetti. The Torre del Mangia is very interesting from the point of view of architecture, design, and history.
*Romulus and Remus: according to legend, they were born of the gods and then set adrift on the Tiber river. Later, they agreed to build a city of their own where they had been rescued and raised by a she-wolf. The city became Rome. Romulus, like Cain, killed his brother to take the spoils of the city.
