The city of Rome, with a territory of about 1,290 square kilometers, is the largest commune and city of Italy, as well as one of the largest capitals in the entire European continent. Besides this, since its origins and for about a millennium, Rome was the most important city in Europe – and the rest of the western world. Also, according to many experts, Rome was the largest city in the entire world. Considering these facts, it is easy to imagine the amazing amount of interesting places a visitor can meet in this city, being without any doubt one of the most appealing destinations to travel to in Italy.
The origins of Rome date from as long ago as the 9th century BC, when some northern tribes settled in this region of Italy. These first settlements were established within the famous roman Seven Hills, called Esquilince, Quirinal, Viminal, Aventine, Caelian, Palatine Hills, and Capitoline. Nowadays, these seven hills along with the Tiber River are intrinsic parts of the city's personality, and probably are its most characteristic and famous natural landmarks. (It's likely that nothing in Rome will ever be more famous than the Coliseum.)
The best time of the year to travel to Rome for a vacation is between March and June, when summer begins. Between June and August, in the middle of summer time, this city often goes through temperatures of more than 35ºC. These higher temperatures are not necessarily conducive to walking around and sightseeing – especially in the hills. The average temperature in winter time is around 12ºC. These moderately cold temperatures are ideal for some tourists, while others prefer the warmer times for their vacations and travel. These are matters of individual taste and preference, but be sure to visit when you are comfortable getting out and viewing the city and its countless offerings.
