The French Region of Normandy
for a Special Vacation

Normandy is a region located towards the northern side of France and which is divided in two main areas: Upper Normandy or Haute Normandie and Lower Normandy or Basse Normandie. Upper Normandie is composed by the department of Eure and the department of Seine Maritime, while Lower Normandy is composed by the departments of Orne, Manche, and Calvados. It is also interesting to know that Normandy has its own regional language, the Norman, which nowadays is only spoken by a small amount of its inhabitants. This region is very beautiful and attractive and is one of the most visited spots for tourists who travel to France for a vacation.

Normandy has a population of around 3.2 million people and a population density of approximately 107 inhabitants per km2. The principal city of Normandy is Rouen with about 385,000 inhabitants, followed by Le Havre, Caen, and Cherbourg Octeville. Besides these, there also are several other interesting cities visitors can meet during their vacation in Normandy, such as, for example, Avranches, Alencon, Countances, Lisieux, Saint Lo, Sainte Mere Eglise, Arromanches, Bayeux, Dieppe, and Saint Sauveur le Vicomte, among others.

 

The region of Normandy is characterized by having an important amount of Rivers, such as the Eure, the Cuesnon, the Seine, the Vire, the Orne, the Robec, the Touques, and the Risle. As it can be guessed, this region of France offers a variety of unique and beautiful natural landscapes as well as a very attractive combination of these landscapes with antique constructions. Besides this, this region has a very attractive modern bridge, the Pont of Normandie, which is famous among engineers in the entire world.

According to historians, during the middle Ages the region of Normandy was inhabited by the Normans, a group of invaders that was mainly composed by Vikings and Gauls. Besides this, it might be also interesting to know that between 1345 and 1360 as well as between 1415 and 1450, Normandy was invaded and occupied by the English. Other interesting fact about the history of Normandy is that, during the 14th and 15th centuries, several families moved to the south of Italy, mainly to the area of Sicily where they founded a kingdom.

One of the most famous historical events in the life of Normandy is what is known as the D Day. The D Day took place at June 6 of 1944 when the Allie Forces invaded Normandy in order to liberate the northwestern are of Europe. Nowadays, visitors who travel to Normandy can meet several monuments built in honor to that date and the soldiers who lost their lives in it.

Normandy is famous by being the birth or home town of a large number of important artists. Among these artists, we can name, for example, Jacques Francois Ancelot, Jeanne Marie Leprince de Beaumont, Casimir Delavigne, Octave Mirbeau, Bernard le Bovier de Fontanelle, Pascal Quignard, Antoine de Montchrestien, Andre Breton, Jean Jacques Boisard, Alain Chartier, Francois le Metel de Boisribert, and Abbe de Saint Pierre.
