Vacation in Naples
The New City

Naples, the capital city of the Italian Province of the same name, as well as of the region of Campania, was named after the word "Neapole." Originally from the Greek term "Nea Polis," and which means, simply, "New City." Naples is characterized by offering a variety of attractions that are rich in history and design, as well as by counting with a unique traditional cuisine that is an intrinsic part of its inhabitants' culture.

Taking plenty of time for planning to travel to Naples, and including all the details, can make a great difference in how many places tourists can visit and enjoy during their vacation. This is due to the fact that this destination offers a very large number of amazing attractions, and all those who wish to see as many as possible should design their vacation carefully. On the other hand, visiting this destination without schedules and in a spontaneous way can also be very exciting, since tourists would surely be surprised all the time by the different, attractive spots they would find.

The history of Naples starts around the 7th century BC, when the Greeks founded this city with the name of Neapolis. Naples conserved the Greek language for several centuries, and even during the Roman times this city maintained its original traditions and cultural habits. During the following centuries, Naples went through several different denominations, being occupied by Longobards, Byzantines, Normans, Aragoneses, Swabians, Angevins, Bourbons, and Spaniards – among others.

Due to the many different groups of people who have inhabited Naples throughout its long history, this city offers a very interesting appearance, and its architecture reflects and combines this aspect of its past. This way, it is always recommendable that visitors learn about the town's history before their vacation, in order to be able to discover and observe how its past can be still noticed to the date through its constructions, traditions, and people.

One of the most characteristic and traditional elements of Naples is the pizza. Naples is the home town of pizza by excellence, and any tourist who visits without trying it would miss one of the most typical ingredients of this city's traditions. The *Pizza Margherita was born in Naples, representing the three colors of the Italian flag: white represented by mozzarella cheese, red represented by the tomato sauce or pomodoro, and green represented by basil. Besides the pizza, Naples is also famous for several other popular dishes and deserts, such as, for example, its babá, made with sweet paste, or its choux, a ball of leavened paste filled with rich cream.

It is interesting to know that the Historical Centre of Naples was named a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1995. This clearly shows the historical importance of this city, and the wide amount of interesting places visitors can see during their vacation. An example of the most attractive historical spots tourists can visit in Naples is provided by its great number of antique churches, in which we can find, for example, the Santa Maria del Carmine, the Cathedral of St. Januarius, the Gesu Novo, the Santa Chiara, the Sant' Anna dei Lombardi, the San Giovanni a Carbonara, and the Santa Maria La Nova – among many others.

* The invention of the popular dish we call pizza is attributed to an Italian baker named Raffaele Esposito of Naples. In 1889 Esposito was working in a Naples pizzeria called "Pietro... e basta così." Raffaele baked three unique pizzas for the coming visit of King Umberto I and Queen Margherita of Savoy. The Queen's favorite pizza of the three was, coincidentally, very patriotic, evoking the colors of the Italian flag: Green basil leaves, white mozzarella cheese, and red tomatoes. It was named Pizza Margherita in honor of the Queen.
