Milan, in Lombardy

The city of Milan is one of the most appealing destinations a tourist can travel to in Italy. This city, located towards the northern region of Italy and within the *plains of Lombardy, is not only one of the most famous spots of that country, but also the main city in its region. This is one of the first destinations tourists should have in mind when planning to travel or spend a vacation in a place that combines history, arts, and exciting activities in Italy.

The urban area of Milan, known as La Grande Milano, has a population of more than 4,280,000 inhabitants, while its central area, the city itself, has about 1,310,000 inhabitants. It is interesting to know that, due to its size and importance, this city is often seen as a second capital of the country, and many times it is mistaken with the capital itself. This same phenomenon happens in America with Louisville, Kentucky. Louisville is often mistaken to be the capital of Kentucky, yet the capital is Frankfurt.

The name of this city, Milan, comes from the Celtic word "Medelhan," which could be translated as "in the plain" or "in the middle of the plain," a name that is allusive to its geographical location. This city is known after several different denominations throughout the entire world, such as, for example, "Mailand" in German, or "Milán" in the local dialect of Western Lombardy.

Milan is famous as a fashion centre, counting with a great amount of famous firms, shops, and designers. This is where the famous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele is located, the first shopping mall of the world -- and probably the most famous one as well. Besides all this, Milan is also known as one of the main world capitals of fashion, with Paris, London, New York, and Tokyo, receiving famous fashion people in a constant basis, and being where many of the most important fashion events of the world take place every year.

According to experts in archaeology and history, the origins of the city of Milan can be traced back to the year 600 BC, when it is believed that a group of Celtics founded the first settlement in this part of the country. During the 4th century, Milan was the capital city of the Western Roman Empire and had a great importance in not only Italy, but the rest of Europe as well. In the following years and centuries, Milan has gone through several important historical moments, as well as it has had a relevant impact on many artistic, design, and architectural trends in Europe as well as in the entire world.

Besides its fashion related attractions, Milan also offers a variety of other attractive and unique spots visitors should not miss during their vacation in this city. All those tourists who are interested in disciplines such as architecture and design should try to visit places like the Castello Sforzesco, the Duomo, the Palazzo Reale, the *Santa Marie delle Grazie (an antique church of Reinassental style where the Last Supper of Leonardo da Vinci is hosted), the Central Station, the Pirelli Tower, the Palazzo Serbelloni, and the Galleria Vittorino Emanuele II among many others.

* The Plains of Lombardy constitute much of Lombardy, a region of northern Italy. It is a flat grain-growing plain area of the country.

* Santa Maria delle Grazie (St. Mary of Graces), also Madonna delle Grazie (Our Lady of Graces) is the name given to many hundreds of churches built throughout Italy and the Italian parts of Switzerland.

To change Centigrade to Fahrenheit use the formula (#°x9/5)+32.
0°C = 32°F • 10°C = 50°F • 30°C = 86°F • 40°C = 104°F
