Travel to Aquitaine for Vacation

Aquitaine is a very attractive destination located within the south western area of France, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, the Pyrenees, and Spain. Tourists who travel to this region of France for a vacation could meet a variety of attractive spots, such as the Cote d'Argent which is one of the most attractive coasts in the country, or the Basin 'Arcachon where visitors can collect shellfish as well as enjoy a very relaxing walk while being surrounded by beautiful landscapes. Besides this, this region is world wide famous by its traditional wines and dishes, being these also considered one of the main attractions tourists can enjoy during their visit.

During the Roman times, this region of France was known as Gallia Aquitania and would include all the territory surrounded by the Garonne River and the Pyrenees Mountains. After that, and towards the 4th century, this Roman province was divided in three main areas known as: Aquitania prima, Aquitania Secunda, and Aquitania Tertia. Aquitania Prima was located in the north eastern area of this destination and would include the regions of Velay, Berry, Auvergne, Bourbonnais, Marche, Albigeois, Gevaudan, Quercy, and Rouergue.

 

The second region that composed Aquitania during the Roman times, Aquitania Secunda, was located to the northwestern region of this part of France and was composed by Poitou, Angoumois, Bordelais, Saintogne, and Guyenne. The third region, Aquitania Tertia, was the southern portion of Aquitania and would composed by Comminges, Bearn, the Basque Country, Bigorre, and Armagnac among others.

Towards endings of the 5th century, and for a short period of time, Aquitaine became ruled by the Visigoths. Around the year 508, the Franks invaded this territory and replaced the Visigoths, becoming the rulers for several centuries. After the Visigoths, and towards the 8th century, Aquitaine became part of the Caroligian Empire. While it belonged to the empire of Charlemagne, was managed by Berdnard Plantevelue and his son, who were known as the Dukes of Aquitaine.

As it can be noticed, this destination has been part of many kingdoms as well as has been in the hands of many different rulers and counts with a very interesting and rich history. This way, while visiting Aquitaine, tourists could meet a large amount of spots that are strongly related to the history of not only France but also Europe and the entire world, as well as they can also meet a variety of other attractions, since this destination combines past and modern life in a very appealing way.

The economy of Aquitaine is based on a variety of activities. This region of France is one of the main producers and exporters of grapes and wine of France, being this considered one of the undisputable main resources of Aquitaine. Besides this, this region also bases its economy on the extraction of petrol and gas natural, as well as on cattle, forestry, the production of aerospace systems, and tourism, this last especially depending on towns and villages such as Hendaye, St Jean de Luz, and Biarritz.
