Devon – Two Coastlines in One Vacation

Devon is a peculiar English county which counts with two non contiguous coastlines. This county is located towards the south western region of England and near Dorset, Cornwall and Somerset. This is a perfect destination for all those tourists who wish to travel to a place that allows them to have a vacation next to the sea as well as enjoy a wide variety of attractions.

According to the experts on the subject, Devon is among the most antique settlements in the entire of England, due to the fact that some discoveries have allowed affirming that this place was already inhabited in the last ice age. During its beginnings, in 6000 BC, this region of England was populated by Mesolithic hunter gatherer inhabitants. Later, this place was controlled by the Romans, who gave it its actual name, Devon, being this similar to the term they used to denominate the Celtics who lived nearby.

 

The county of Devon has been part of an important number of the civil conflicts England had after the époque of the Normans. Among these conflicts, of which Devon has been part, we can name, for example, the Prayer Book Rebellion of 1550, the Wars of the Roses of 1498, the Glorious Revolution of 1687, and the English Civil War. This past full of interesting events has left its mark in the appearance and traditions of the county, in such a way that among the main attractions this destination offers we can find a great amount of historic buildings and spots related to relevant events. Many travel here for their vacation in order to visit the remnants of these historic conflicts.

The two main urban centers of Devon are Exeter and Plymouth, both extremely attractive and interesting cities that tourists should never miss while taking a vacation in this region of England. When visiting Exeter, tourists can travel to a unique cathedral built around the year 1045, the Guild of Tuckers known to be the oldest municipal building of England, or a Tudor building constructed in the 14th century known as the House that Moved due to the fact that it has to be relocated during the creation of a new road. In Plymouth, visitors could meet, for example, a very interesting City Museum and Art Gallery where a variety of elements and objects related to archaeological discoveries, the history of arts, and natural history are exhibited. These things alone would fill a week or two of vacation.

Besides Exeter and Plymouth, there also are many other interesting cities and towns tourists can travel to in Devon County during their vacation. Among these other towns, there are, for example, Brixham, Barnstaple, Okehamptom, Plympton, Beer, Axminster, Bideford, Sidmouth, Dawlish, Salcombe, Dartmouth, Tavistock, Honiton, and Torquay.

Devon counts with several antique railways, such as the Bideford and Instow railway, the Lynton and Barnstaple railway, the Babbacombe Cliff Railway, or the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway, which tourists should not miss when they travel to this destination. Besides this, this county also has a variety of other attractions, among which we can name, for example, the Buckfast Abbey, the Exmoor, the Devon Castles, the Berry Head, the Exmoor, the Lundy Island, and the Jurassic Coast.
