|
The county town of Chester is located towards the northwestern region of England, within Cheshire and near the border with Wales. This city counts with a population of around 91,000 inhabitants in its urban area and is considered to be one of the best preserved walled cities in the United Kingdom, being this way, a very attractive destination for any tourist who wishes to travel for a vacation to this part of the world.
The origins of Chester can be traced back to the Roman times, around 2000 years ago. During that époque, the first walls of this city were built, the first inhabitants arrived, and it became known as Deva. One of the first important constructions this city has was also built during those years: the Fortress of Legio XX Valeria Victrix, located next to the River Dee and which, for a long period of time, was used as a military fort. Many people travel here just to view this bit of history. | |
One of the most interesting antique constructions built in this city was the Old Dee Bridge. The Old Dee Bridge was constructed by the Earl of Chester Hugh Lupus around the year 1080 with the purpose to ensure the river mills would receive water uninterruptedly. The mills of Chester are also one of the town's most characteristic historical elements, and they even have inspired a variety of artists for their creation, in such a way that, for example, the song The Miller of Dee was created in their honor.
After the Romans, the next rulers of Chester were the Romano British. The Romano British divided this region of England into several small kingdoms, and it is believed that during those times Chester would be part of a kingdom called Powys. Next, and after the Battle of Chester, the Anglo Saxons settled in this town, extending the walls the Romans had built and naming this place Ceaster. Mainly thanks to the city's large and strong walls, the Anglo Saxons succeeded avoiding several attempts from the Danes who wished to invade this city.
