A Great Vacation in the Cathedral City of Ely

Ely, located within the eastern area of England, in the district of Cambridge and at about 103 kilometers or 65 miles from London, is a very attractive cathedral city that tourists should not miss meeting when they travel to this region of England. Ely is perfect for those tourists who, during a vacation, wish to be able to meet interesting historical spots and constructions as well as would like to be able to also travel to other attractive places, due to the fact that this city is located nearby several other amazing places, such as, for example, London.

Despite of the fact that this town has been inhabited from many centuries ago, it was not officially recognized as a city by Royal charter until the year 1974. According to the experts and statistics, this city is known to be the sixth smallest in the entire United Kingdom, following Bangor, Saint Davids, the City of London, Armagh, and Somerset. But, despite its small size, this is considered a very attractive vacation destination, which comprises an important amount of unique constructions and appealing attractions.

The coasts and port area of Ely, on the River Great Ouse, are not only attractive but have played an important role throughout the city's history. Until the 18th century, the port of Ely used to be very important in the eastern region of England, while the River is still nowadays an important boating area, in such a way that, for example, the rowing team of the University of Cambridge practices here every year for the famous Boat Race that takes place annually on the River Thames. During the Boat Race is an excellent time to travel to Ely for a vacation.

Reaching Ely can be easily done and tourists on vacation will find many ways to travel to this town from several other destinations. For example, visitors could find direct trains connecting this city with the Stantsted Airport, London Liverpool Street, Manchester, Nottingham, Birmingham, Norwich, London King's Cross, Cambridge, Peterborough, King's Lynn, March, Ipswich, and Thetford. Besides this, there also are several bus lines connecting Ely with the rest of England on a constant basis, in such a way that, if they wish, visitors can easily meet this town while having a vacation in other destination.

The cathedral of Ely, called the Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity, is without any doubt, the first construction visitors should meet when they travel to this area of England. This cathedral, also known as the Ship of the Fens, was built between 1083 and 1350, and is a construction which all those tourists who are fond of disciplines such as design and architecture should not miss. It might be interesting to know that the main tower of this cathedral collapsed in the year 1323, and was re-built in an interesting octagonal shape.

The city of Ely has a very charming appearance due to the fact that it is characterized by buildings of monastic style bordering narrow streets. Those tourists who wish to meet as many interesting places as possible during a vacation in this destination should travel to the local Tourist Centre of Ely located within the cathedral area and ask for information about the main attractions of the city.
