Travel to Arnhem For a Vacation on the Lower Rhine

Arnhem, located towards the eastern area of the Netherlands, is a city as well as a municipality that is part and capital of the Gelderland province. Arnhem has a territory of around 102 km2 and a population of about 142,000 inhabitants, in such a way that the population density is of approximately 1,450 inhabitants per km2.
Tourists that travel to the municipality of Arnhem for a vacation could meet, besides the city of Arnhem itself, five other cities: Rijkerswoerd, Schuytgraaf, Elden, Schaarsbergen, and Malburgen. Each one of this cities or towns count with interesting attractions as well as they all have had an impact in the history of the municipality in some way or another.
The first fact known about Arnhem dates from around the year 894, when it was known as Oppidium Arnoldi Villa. Despite this, this destination did not receive its city rights until the 13th century, when the Count of Guelders Otto II conferred them. Towards the 19th century, the city of Arnhem was a very prosperous resort town and many people would travel there for rest and vacation. Due to its beautiful landscapes, this town started receiving important amounts of visitors on a constant basis, and it became known as het Haagje van het oosten, which can be translated as The Little Hague of the East. Nowadays, this city is still very famous by its green areas and parks, and still receives important amounts of tourists every year.
One of the first spots tourists should make sure of visiting during their vacation in Arnhem is the Groote Kerk or the Church of St. Eusebius. This church was built between the 15th and 16th centuries and, although a part of it was destroyed during World War II, some parts of the original structure can still be met. Other interesting places visitors can meet in this destination are the John Frost Brug or the Bridge of John Frost and the house of Maarten van Rossum.

Arnhem has been the birth or home town of many important and famous people. Among them, we can name, for example, the poet Sir Philip Sidney, who died in this town in 1586; the physicist Hendrick Lorentz, honored with a Nobel Prize; and the actress Audrey Hepburn, who lived in this town and studied at the Arnhem Conservatory for almost ten years.
The National Heritage Museum is a must for every vacation visitor who travels to Arnhem and enjoys cultural buildings. This museum, locally known as the Nederlands Openluchtmuseum, is an open exhibition in which tourists can meet antique farms, factories and houses. Besides this, while being in Arnhem tourists should also try to visit the SEP Control Tower or the KEMA Toren, the highest construction in this city. Also, and specially when traveling with children, tourists should make sure of visiting the Burgers’ Zoo, a zoo that not only counts with a variety of peculiar species and spots but also is the biggest one in the Netherlands. |
