A Vacation in Alsace Lorraine

Alsace Lorraine is a French territory that, throughout its history, has been disputed by many different forces. This territory is composed by parts of the area known as Alsace as well as by other parts called Lorraine, and is located on the western side of the River Rhine, within the eastern region of France. This destination is, without any doubt, a great choice for all those tourists who wish to travel and have a vacation at a place that offers a very interesting past as well as unique antique constructions and spots.

Due to its condition of being a border territory, Alsace Lorraine has been the target of many invaders and conquerors throughout its entire history. According to historians, the first conqueror to go after Alsace Lorraine was Julius Caesar, who became the ruler of it in the 1st century BC, and after what this territory continued being controlled by the Romans for over six centuries.

The next conqueror of Alsace Lorraine, after Julius Caesar, was a Germanic tribe called the Alemanni. The Alemmanis ruled this territory for a short period of time, after that, towards the ending of the 5th century, it was conquered by the Clovis and the Franks. During the time these last invaders were ruling this territory, its inhabitants became Christianized.

After the Franks, and towards the 9th century, Alsace Lorraine became again part of the Roman Empire, this time ruled by Charlemagne. During the 13th century, this area of France started becoming very prosperous after becoming an important commercial centre that would be seen as a stop point in the commerce between the Netherlands, Scandinavia, and England with Switzerland and Germany.

One of the most interesting cultural places tourists could visit during their vacation in Alsace Lorraine is the Musee Historique Lorrain. This museum is considered to be among the most important ones in all France and exhibits a large amount of art work pieces and other objects related to this region of the country and its past. The building in which this historic objects are exhibited is an attraction by itself as well, due to the fact that it was built around the 15th century and was used as a Franciscan convent before becoming a museum.

Another place tourists should not miss when they travel to Alsace Lorraine is the town of Metz, one of the most antique cities in France. This town counts with many unique constructions and interesting places, such as, for example, parks, museums, churches, as well as attractive shops and restaurants. The main attraction offered by Metz, and one of the main attractions in Alsace Lorraine, is the Cathedral St. Etienne. This cathedral was built between the 13th and 16th centuries, and shows a very unique and impressing aspect, being considered the third highest cathedral in the entire country. Other interesting place visitors can meet during their vacation in this region of France is the Theater on Place de la Comedie, a theater which was built in the 18th century and is considered to be the most antique one that is still functioning in the entire country.
