1877 Tom Edison announces his "talking machine" invention: the phonograph...
Thomas Alva Edison (February 11, 1847 – October 18, 1931) was a prolific American inventor known primarily for his invention of the light bulb. On this date Edison announced his new sound recording invention, but he did not demonstrate it until November 29. The device was ultimately patented on February 19, 1878 (US Patent 200,521). This invention was followed by the Graphophone in 1886, and then the Gramophone in 1887 – neither of which was developed by Edison. It was Edison's first method, however, that lead to the sophisticated sound recording systems we have today.
