1834 The HMS Beagle, with Charles Darwin aboard, sails from Valparaiso…
Charles Robert Darwin was born on 12 February, 1809 and died on 19 April, 1882. The English naturalist is best known for his groundbreaking and controversial book "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection" or "The Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life" or "The Origin of Species." Darwin wrote his momentous work in 1859, though he initially made his concept of "natural selection" known as early as 1838. At that time (and similarly today), Darwin's ideas were considered heretical and he kept them predominately to himself. After Darwin heard of the work of Alfred Russel Wallace, who also believed in evolving species and natural selection, the two jointly published the famous book. Darwin received credit for the book, and Alfred Russel Wallace was largely ignored – despite his extensive research. Only the first printing of the work included any credit to Alfred Russel Wallace.
