1895 The first U.S. patent is granted for an automobile to George Selden…
When people think of the automobile, they think, naturally, of Henry Ford. Few people realize that it was actually a lawyer, George Selden, who patented the first automobile. And Selden retained those rights for many years, collecting generous royalties for every engine-propelled vehicle produced.
In 1903, Selden's patent was challenged by Henry Ford and four other automobile manufacturers. The plaintiff's lost the law suit, but appealed the ruling. Finally, in 1911, Ford won the suit because the new automobiles were based on a different engine design – albeit an internal combustion system. After he lost the case, Selden changed the name of his car making company from the Selden Motor Car Company to the Selden Truck Sales Corporation, which was ultimately purchased by the Bethlehem Truck Company in 1930. |
