1922 Howard Carter discovers the tomb of Tutankhamen in Egypt…
His full name was Nebkheperure Tutankhamun, preceded by his title/status, Pharaoh. He is better known as just plain Tutankhamun, but most often referred to simply as King Tut. Even comedian Steve Martin wrote a song about him. King Tut rules from ruled 1333 BC – 1324 BC, during the Eighteenth dynasty of Egypt.
During King Tut's rule, he really did not accomplish anything genuinely significant – certainly nothing to merit the level of attention he gets in the modern world. But his tomb was discovered in amazingly good condition, and had not been vandalized, robbed, or otherwise damaged. This made it an exceptionally important find in the world of early archaeology. The tomb, which was located in the famous Valley of Kings, has been the center of much scholarly attention, and controversy. King Tut's tomb was discovered by one Howard Carter and his team.
Tomb finder Mr. Carter was much more intent on recovering the riches of the tomb, than he was in the scientific value of the find. Unfortunately, much of the plunder was either being 'worn' by the mummy, or had been permanently attached to the mummy with resins. To get all the booty, the body was cut into sections – 'carefully.' The gold mask that had been glued to Tut's face was cut away using heated blades. There is currently a legal battle in progress to have all the riches of the tomb returned to their place of origin.
