December 12, 1964 Shooting begins for the "Star Trek" TV series pilot "The Cage"
This was the pilot that started the phenomenon known as Star Trek. It enjoyed only a modest viewership during its scheduled runs, but years later burgeoned out into a full blown cultural phenomenon. It likely has more spin-off shows, books, and memorabilia than any other TV show in history.
