1862 Belle Boyd is released from Old Capital Prison in Washington, D.C….
Her real name was Maria Isabella Boyd, but she was not well known by that name. She was born on May 4, 1844 in Martinsburg, West Virginia, and died June 11, 1900. During the American Civil War, Ms. Boyd was a Confederate spy. While working in her father's hotel, she would gather and then pass information to Turner Ashby and General Stonewall Jackson. Belle would send her messages by way of her slave, Eliza Hopewell. Hopewell would conceal and carry the messages in a hollowed-out watch case.

On July 29, 1862, she was taken prisoner and subsequently held in the Old Capitol Prison in Washington. For her spying, she was awarded the Southern Cross of Honor by the CSA. In 1864 she moved to England. Subsequently she moved back to the US and ultimately ended up an actress living in Kilbourne City, Wisconsin – where she passed away at the age of 55.
