1981: Divers begin to recover a safe that is found aboard the sunken Andrea Doria…
The Andrea Doria was a massive luxury ocean liner built in Italy in 1951. The ship was 697 feet in length, with a beam of 90 feet and a gross tonnage of 29,100. Powered by twin steam turbines, the Andrea Doria could achieve a top speed of 26 knots, and could cruise at 23 knots. The ship could accommodate over 1,200 passengers during a transoceanic voyage.
The Andrea Doria has the dubious distinction of being recalled as being involved in one of the worst maritime disasters in history. With barely five years of service to her name, the Andrea Doria was struck broadside by the SS Stockholm, of the Swedish-American Line. The accident occurred off of the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts, and while 1,660 people were rescued, 46 people were lost to the sea. The day after the accident, the Andrea Doria herself sunk, and was never retrieved.
