At that time, when nobody had any idea what the comet really was, it caused quite the raucous. Even as late as the early 1900's, when Halley made its near-earth trip, people were quite afraid of the impending doom. On the streets of New York, 'Comet Pills' were sold to protect people from the toxic gases.
