There are many excellent products available for killing fleas and their eggs – on the dog, and off. Check with your Tucson veterinarian for which product best suits your dog. If you suspect flea infestation in the house, you can try spraying and then vacuuming. Be sure to get all around the edges of each room as fleas tend to migrate to edge areas. And don't forget to treat and wash the dog's bedding.
There are some excellent powders made that you can sprinkle around your carpet areas, then 'rake' through the fibers. Follow the instructions, and finish with a thorough vacuuming. This will help prevent a new infestation. Note: remove the vacuum cleaner bag you use, and put it into a sealed plastic bag – then throw away the bag! You must throw it away to avoid keeping some fleas that may have survived the powder, and will surely lay more eggs on your dog, or in your carpet.
If you are not sure whether your dog has fleas or not, or you are at all squeamish about treating your dog for fleas, see your veterinarian. Vets have numerous options available for treatment, including giving Rover an injection of an anti-flea drug, which goes directly into their system. Or, the doctor may have the pet take the same drug in a tablet form. These treatments will keep the dog free from fleas for up to one year, and eliminates the need for powders or liquid dipping solutions. It's really quite nice for the dog – and you. But if you've already got an infestation at home, you'll still have to deal with it to break the flea's cycle.
Tucson has a healthy flea population, to be sure, but conscientious dog owners have a multitude of things available that will make keeping the four-legged family member parasite free, and happy.
