Dotcom Tucson News Resources

Tired of getting your news from the same old places? If so, then you've clicked on the right icon!

On this page you'll find some links to some very unusual, informative, and interesting news services - some traditional, some not so traditional. A brief explanation and/or synopsis of the content of each site listed is given.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/
This link will take you to the homepage of the International Version of the BBC home page. The BBC's perspective on world news (including US events) is quite different from that of the US news services. The humor is very dry, and the features are not what Americans are used to. This site can be viewed in several languages including Persian and Vietnamese.

http://www.prwatch.org/
This is a link to the Center for Media and Democracy. In the words of the site owners: The nonprofit Center for Media and Democracy strengthens participatory democracy by investigating and exposing public relations spin and propaganda, and by promoting media literacy and citizen journalism, media "of, by and for the people."

http://www.craigslist.org/
Craigslist is a most unusual site. It's not as laden with news as it is other things – like a massive classifieds section. When you get there, locate "Tucson" on the right side and click. Then peruse what's available that day. You can sell things free in the classifieds, or switch to any of the other cities. It's interesting, light-duty news and other interesting distractions.

http://www.hbns.org/
If you're interested in health matters, consider the news service of the Center for the Advancement of Health. Health Behavior News Service deals with matters of health at all levels. The front page won't offer too much, but on the right side navigation panel you can select the article lists from the past. This is a serious site about health.

http://www.libertymatters.org
This site, presented by the Liberty Matters News Service, is quite unusual. Don't expect to find mainstream maters dealt with in mainstream ways. The service is not updated every day, and contains some sizzling editorial opinions and unique or 'suppressed' perspectives about second and third tier news stories – though front page items do make it here occasionally.

http://www.chron.com/
This link to the Houston Chronicle is included because it offers a good bit of mainstream news (not just about Houston) in a relatively uncluttered and easily navigable interface. If you're doing full spectrum research of a topic, the opinions and perspectives of this site can help create a more balanced final result.

http://www.streetnewsservice.org/
Welcome to the Street News Service. This service collects and presents news stories from 'street papers' located around the world. There's everything from mainstream topics, to the truly obscure and unusual. Not all entries are available in English – but it's a good place to practice up on your Hindi or Chinese. It's a very interesting site for news buffs.

http://www.un.org/news/
This link is to the official United Nations News service. You can review news by region (the right side panel takes you there) or you can just peruse the front page offerings. If you're tired of having the UN's actions 'digested' for you by newscasters, then this is definitely a site you should visit. It's great for genuine research of many items and projects.

http://del.icio.us/
In the words of the site: "Everything on del.icio.us is someone's favorite - they've already done the work of finding it. Explore and enjoy." You'll find some unique items in here, as well as some unusual treatments of mainstream topics. There's a'tech-edge' to this site – lots of information and article about tech matters.
