Part IV
First Dates

As we all know, dating can be tough — and first dates can be brutal. Here are some dating tips that might just make it easier.

• Be sure to meet your date out somewhere, and drive yourself. If you want to bail out early, you won't be trapped. Also, if you take your own car and things go well, you won't have any worries about inviting your date in – or not. This helps protect you from your own impulses, because what's worse than "will he/she respect me in the morning?" is "How much will I hate myself when I wake up?" Further, when you have your own car, no need to worry about safety, and your date does not know where you live. This protects you from a date turned bad turning in to a stalking nightmare.

• It's a good idea to keep this initial date simple. Both of you are nervous enough already without making a big show, plus you don't want to lock yourself into a possibly long evening that you won't (can't) enjoy.

• Men, it's up to you to end the date first. It's old school proper, and will make you stand out - positively

Single Male

• Ladies, don't wear anything too low cut or short. It sounds cliché, but your first date knows very little about the woman you are. He will take you at face value, and you don't want to give an impression that will haunt you.

• The best route to take is to wear clothing that you are comfortable and confident wearing – you know those outfits. First dates are uncomfortable enough without a tight leather belt biting your waist, or always wondering if your skirt is clinging and climbing.

• Remember gentlemen, be specific about where you are going to meet. This will make your date a lot more comfortable, and ensure she doesn't wear a cocktail dress to the bowling alley.

• Ask interesting, but non-invasive questions about your date. Don't be shy about giving your date information about yourself, but the most interesting conversationalists are people who ask about others. Some light topics include: hobbies, sports, work, and pets – kids, if you know they have any.

• Don't overdue the colognes and perfumes. You don't want to knock anyone down, or cause an allergic response.

• Mouthwash! And maybe something in your pocket for the evening.

• Avoid ordering 'sloppy food.' If you are not paying for what you order, it's still polite to stay in the middle pricing range of the menu.
